Been busy installing new HVAC on our house. Was thinking of buying a HVAC pump to finish instead of paying for service call. Has anyone used a HVAC pump for vacuum bagging. I'm planning to frame in for new hardtop then use isinglass for window area. Top would be vacuum bagged.

I have not tried it, but it might work. It needs to pull a strong vacuum, which Im sure it will. Also, you need something that can more a volume of air. If the pump doesnt move volume, then use a shop vac to get it out, then put on the HVAC pump.

That is the kind of pump I use. Mine is 6CFM which helps with big parts. I did a hardtop project and that was the one I used. You need to get some diffeent fitting and a gauge but works great. Can get to 27"Hg no problem. Finding the leaks....that is another story.

Defiitely vacuum from the outside of the part so air in not pulled across the part. Trust me, I learned that one. I will pull a photo over.

That's similar to setups I found online. Gonna look at some new units while at Johnstone Supply tomorrow. What type of foam did you use for the core on your top? Is that cut out for ladder access? I keep adding more projects to this and will never get it in the water. Thanks for the photos they get me going in the right direction.

The foam Is polynumac which is poly urethane. Joel corrected me yesterday as I thought it was PVC. The cut out is a access to the crows nest. There is a door on it but I don't have that photo. I can take one if you want to see it.

That came out perfect! I'm not planning for crows nest but will make it sturdy enough in case I change my mind. Thanks again for the pictures

Thanks Joel. I have most of the top covered with a cut bait station that drains to a through hull.
The other half is going to be a starboard Half moon. Scrapped the plan of storing air tanks due to the weight.

Thanks. Used a trash can with some PVA. Wish I had the vacuum pump back then.

Got back to tinkering on boat a few weeks ago. Had to lock myself in a room for a few months to study for a course I needed for work. Finally have the sole, transom and bracket all faired in with help from my wife and son. Working on sanding and fairing any imperfections on bottom and sides. Almost plugged a hole that I thought was a hawse pipe up front but after getting in and looking around realized it's a drain for m anchor locker. Close call.

Joel do you carry and filler for epoxy thickening. Didn't notice any while on the site?

it looks really nice. If you plan to use kiwigrip on the sole, don't knock yourself out fairing too much, it will fill quite a bit

Thanks Jim . I decided to frame in the wheel house and add some tilt out windows up front and sliders on the sides. Still plan to form up the hardtop and vacuum bag it.
Have to get the bottom and sides primed then move it outside to work on the new Hard top. Not enough clearance in my shop to get it out.

Planning on painting topsides with Awlgrip. Any input on using kiwi grip over the Awlgrip. I really like how hard it sets so not to concerned with making repairs if dinged.

Spent most of this past weekend wet sanding the bottom up to the water line and only really found 7 spots where I need to repair the Gel coat. Most are small dings no bigger then a pencil eraser. One big area at the bow where I'm guessing she was beached  during Island hopping. Two spots about the size of a quarter and half dollar. There were allot of fine scratches that sanded out. everything is sanded to 1000 and ready to polish. I'll post some pictures next time of before and after.

I have some Kevlar that I was planning to cut to a fine 1/8th to 1/16 mix then add to the new Gel coat to cover this front bow area to add some protection. The rest of the locations I hope to finish this week so I can polish out the bottom next weekend before dropping her down onto cradle to move around again while I prep the topsides and start on the wheel house.

Be careful with the Kevlar, you cannot really sand it, it just makes impossibly tough balls of felt. If you're going to use Kevlar you should cover it with mat or woven cloth in order to be able to fair it.

On the boat I am about to build I may vacuum bag a layer of Kevlar on the keel and strakes, but there will be a layer of glass over top so it can be faired.

Thanks Joel
That sounds like a good time to test out my new vacuum pump also.
It's all vertical so it may be easier to layup Kevlar in some gel coat then add the woven and bag it.

Thanks again Joel after testing the kevlar it would have made a mess of something that wasn't that bad. Ended up just grinding the spots with glass showing and reapplying gel coat. Color match isnt perfect but after fading it out it looks pretty good. Also got the bracket painted

Ever use expanding foam for core?
I'm thinking of using some 2 Lb expanding foam in a
Mold covered with release for my hard top.
That would be the blank then use the vacuum
After laying up glass.
This the 2 lb foam you used to sell Joel?  cheers cheers

You would have to keep the mold under extreme clamping pressure. This is how boston whalers and others are built, they clamp the molds together and fill. It certainly possible, but I think it might make for more work then juts using another core than can be bent over a male mold and glassed.

In terms of shaping a blank, if you have even shaped a surfboard, then you know how its done. Problem with pouring your own is that you would have to get it just right in order to have the consistency the same throughout.

For a shade top that takes little or no loads a PU or EPS core shaped like a surfboard would probably work. But if there are any hardware or people pulling on it, i would not try it.
