Hi Joel,

Following up from a THT post to ask for a response for posterity on your forum http://www.thehulltruth.com/boating-forum/777792-composite-materials-transom-stringers-pourable-v-composite-core.html

What is your experience in using this CarbonFoam FRP 28 lb/ft3 board? How does it cut? Absorb resin?

Rebuilding another speed boat transom, need one sheet of material. Replacing 3X 1/2" plywood, ~1/8" exterior skin and ~ 3/8" interior. Will lay up a few layers of glass on the inside of exterior when bedding the transom core. I'll also be replacing the two large knees.

What is needed at the bolting hole locations when using these higher density / reinforced foams? One buddy of mine cast thickened epoxy inserts in a pvc tube, cut disks, and bed them within his coosa at the bolt centers. I will have 16 holes for a large static set-back, rather not do that 16 times. If I use large backing plates for the bolts, is anything required? Just seal in epoxy? Glue in a tube sleeve from FRP or CF tube?

Do you have the 4x8 28lb/ft3 sheet in stock for pickup?

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

Rebuilding another speed boat transom
You must like this stuff Smile

Yes, I have a few sheets of the transom foam in stock, you can pick it up any time, just let me know when.

Its dense enough you do not need any insert, its one reason to use this over another core where (while others might be lighter) you dont have to worry about compression. Use large backing plates, I like channel turned on edge if there is room.

It does not absorb much, its pretty dense stuff. I would always roll on a coat if neat epoxy on any core, "hot coat" before laminating or gluing
