Questions: how thick a shim should that be?
I got the idea for trapezoidal foam from Casey’s “This Old Boat” – the revised ed. Seems to be the bible and he recommends the trapezoidal shim to AVOID filleting with putty – just tape over the foam. He also specifies PU foam.
shim can be very small, but 1/2" would work well.
A PU foam trapezoid fillet will not work, unless its high enough density to have the right compressive strength. There is not anything at a home store that will do the job. Maybe on a very small boat or a part that does not experience much load. I cant imagine anyone would say you can use plain PU insulation foam for a structural fillet
