Hi Bluewater, I would take the spar varnish off, it would be the weak link as far as bonding goes. From a surface contamination standpoint, I would not be 100% confident either unless I tested a piece first. If it were mine, I would sand the varnish (if you can sand it) then test the ST gloss over top on a small part. If it lays out without signs of surface contamination, then you should be good to go.
