Mako 17 rebuild
Decided to dig into my mako after contemplating for a while. Got the floor and all the foam removed yesterday. Moving to the transom now. Wanted some input on the best way to get to the transom core. I think I'll have to remove fish boxes but wanted to know the best place to make the cuts. " />[img(1px,1px)]

I would recommend cutting at least a few inches forward of the boxes, this way you have plenty of room to work and when you go to put it back together you have mostly flat joints to fair

with a 2 part boat, that might be a lot of work, depends how well that liner is still attached

I was talking to day trip. He thought it may be best. I was wanting to set up a rear platoform like he did. What would make it so difficult. Just pulling it apart?

If it will come off easy, then it certainly makes the work easier. go for it

Got Stringers installed. Transom grounded ready for raised skin. And cap removed. Foam had the starboard side of the cap a pain to get off

Haven't decided may do the pvc like you did in your boat. I laid 1808 over the hull yesterday.

Re: Mako 17 rebuild
the boat originally had some pretty tight spacing between stringers. I would definitely put one down the middle to break it up.
Re: Mako 17 rebuild
Ok so run the pvc and looks like you ended yours at your bilge bulkhead. Correct?

Re: Mako 17 rebuild
Yes, and you need to use a tall PVC section. You want that PVC stringer to be 4" tall. On the boat Im building now, the PVC is mostly a drain, so I just used one layer of glass. For yours, you will be using it as a stringer, so you need several layers of heavy glass. Your basically making a hollow fiberglass stringer, PVC is just a shape/form
Re: Mako 17 rebuild
You don't think my addition of the bulkheads will give the hull enough support without the center stringer

not unless you make them very tight together.

Got transom layed. Used 3 layers of 1808 and added extra tabbing

Re: Mako 17 rebuild
I would have cored the entire transom. Its OK to do it the way you did, but all the pushing is going to go through those stringer extensions
Re: Mako 17 rebuild
I am still going to core the sides with the same material is that what you mean?

yeah, it just would have been better to core the transom all at once - continuous glass across the inside skin.
Re: Mako 17 rebuild
Yea that would have been a lot easier too. I hope to lay the rest this week

Got bottom close to fair and shot with first coat of primer. Haven't trouble getting some grinder marks out that are running length wise. Not sure if you can see them in the pics.

Re: Mako 17 rebuild
I dont see the grinder marks. It the bottom of the boat, I would save my time/effort for the sides.
Re: Mako 17 rebuild
Finally finished the bottom. Now back to building. Going to add another bulkhead I guess. Between these two will be a livewell/cooler then the anchor locker.
